SWANNAY A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK IN EUNSON CUP
Sunday saw the fly fishermen returning to Swannay for the last time in the season, to fish for the Eunson Cup. This was one of the competitions where there is a draw for partners which mixes everybody up, very popular, with a chance to fish with someone different.
Conditions for the 11am start weren’t too bad, with cloud cover and a good breeze, albeit from the west, which restricts long shoreline drifts. The sun broke through and this ramped up the wind, and curtailed sport for many. The west end of the loch was popular at the start, with only 1 boat north of the Muckle Holm, this didn’t stay like that for long, with boats. Spreading far and wide as the day went on.
Winner of the Eunson Cup at the end of play was Ian Hutcheon with a commendable basket, given the conditions, 10 fish for 6lb 7ozs. Runner up was Norman Irvine with 7 for 5lb 10ozs. Others who overcame the conditions included, Raymond Miller, Stewy Leslie and Thorfinn Muir. Heaviest fish was weighed in by Brian Thompson, which went 1lb 6ozs. Thanks to Norman and Dill for officiating, great job as always.
Tactics were varied, but a switch to fast sinking lines when the sun came out certainly was the way to go, with Ian Hutcheon switching to the Booby Basher to take a few extra, vital fish. Others fished DI7 Sweep, DI5 etc to do likewise. Flies were the norm, Ace of Spades, Naked Spur, Clan Chief, Madeira Hog, Hares Ear Hog.
After what seems like an age, we are back to Harray next Thursday foraminifera evening session. It’s reportedly fishing well with the water quality making a marked improvement, all we need is a bonny night.
