MIDNIGHT MAGIC FROM JOHN MUNSON
The Midnight Cup conjures up an image of a warm summers evening on the loch with fish rising, flies hatching and endless daylight on the Summer Solstice. Reality, a raw, windy night with a choppy wave, no fish rising, no flies hatching and tough going for many anglers.
The entry of 23 anglers spread out well across Boardhouse for the 6.30pm start, with a large concentration of boats in the Narrows, some at the Barony end and others at the Knowe and Tufta. No boats were fishing the shallow ground but drifting out off the lea shore, for about 100 yards was definitely key for the boat pairing which had the first and second placed anglers aboard.
John Munson secured the Midnight Cup with a cracking basket, 15 fish for 10lb 14ozs, tremendous angling from the Head Ghillie at the Merkister Hotel. His boat partner Malcolm Russell also excelled with 13 for 9lb 8ozs, with Stewy Leslie, Andrew Morgan and Jim Harcus also right up there. Heaviest fish was a beauty at 1lb 13ozs, to Brian Foreman’s rod. The weigh in, by torchlight, was run as smoothly as ever by Leslie Miller and Norman Irvine, thank you lads, it’s much appreciated.
Tactics for the successful rods were pretty standard, with Ginked up Hedgehogs the way to go. John reported doing well with Munchkin, Pumpkin, and black hogs, and claret got a big shout from many others. Fast Glass was the line of choice, perfect for popping those hogs.
The show rolls on to Swannay next weekend, and your guess is as good as mine as to what we will be served up, tight lines,
KK
