FLAT CALM ON HARRAY FOR FERRYLOUPERS TROPHY
Once again, the forecast was slightly off fir the Ferryloupers Trophy on Harray on Wednesday night. Flat calm greeted the 21 anglers for the 6.30 pm start, but there were flies hatching, Caenis, Sedge predominately, so it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Many boats headed north of the Ess Holms, with Nistaben, Biggings, Laithe popular, searching for rising fish to cast at, some found them, some did not. There was also a pretty even split between those fishing the deeper water with sinking lines, and others in the shallows.
Best basket on the night was weighed in by Norman Irvine, a fantastic basket of 7 fish going 7lb 3ozs, more on this later. Closest to Norman was James Bews with 8 for 6lb 7ozs, fishing DI7 and mini lures out off Nistaben, then Ian Hutcheon who also fished out of Nistaben with 7 for 5lb 1oz. Heaviest fish was another cracker for Andrew Morgan weighing 1lb 13ozs. The sums to see who won the Ferryloupers Trophy showed that the 13 Locals average weight was 3lb1 1/2ozs, and the 8 Ferryloupers average was 2lb 13ozs, so the Locaks and Norman won the Trophy.
Norman had an unbelievable start to the competition, fishing Hedgehogs up at Laithe, first cast, he hooked three fish at once, all over the pound, and landed them all. John Leask, Norman’s boat partner said afterwards that Norman had complained to him after landing the fish that he was disappointed a fish hadn’t taken the fourth fly on his cast! Some may say how lucky is that, jammy, etc but in the words of a great golfing ledgend as to how lucky he was winning so many tournaments, he replied, “yes, the more I practise, the luckier I get”, the same adage applies to Norman.
Hedgehogs did well for many on the night, with Hares Ear, Claret and Orange best, Cod N Chips, Boris, Hulk were mentioned amongst the mini lures and Hutch and Sandy’s night greatly improved when they got their Suspenders on.
It’s back on Harray next Wednesday night for the last one on Harray, note that the competition time is 6pm until 10pm, tight lines,
