ROCK HARD ON HARRAY FOR TOMMY THOMSON TROPHY
Unfortunately not a lot of excitement to report from Harray last Saturday as the 21 anglers found that it has really switched off, with fish difficult to find on the skerries and shores, or the deep water. Conditions weren’t too bad at times with a steady westerly and periods of sunshine for most of the day. There were boats on station at all the popular drifts, Lochside, Nistaben and Ess Holms, but not for long as fish were proving elusive. Persistence in some areas proved fruitful for some but not for others but it was obvious that anglers were struggling.
Winner of the Tommy Thomson Trophy was Sandy McConnachie with 5 fish for 5lb 7ozs, a good average fish weight making the difference, tremendous angling on a hard day. Mike Frith also had 5 fish, going 4lb 14ozs for the runner up spot, and Stewy Leslie had 6 fish for 4lb 12ozs. Heaviest fish was a nice one going 1lb 12ozs for Jim Harcus.
Sinking lines took most of the honours on the day, with DI7, DI7 Sweep and DI5 Sweep all quoted and flies were just what you would expect them to be, Erlends Cat, Boris, Cod N Chips and Hulk, but technique is the key to success. Anglers reported fish following flies up to the boat but failing to take a fly, and I noticed quite a few fish jumping 3 feet in the air, never a good sign, possibly the start of an algal bloom which tends to have this effect. Anyway, we don’t have long to wait to do it all again with the next outing on Wednesday evening, surely it can’t be as hard as today, can it? Tight lines,
KK
