MORE CHALLENGING WEATHER FOR THE WS SINCLAIR CUP ON SWANNAY
Wednesday night was the rearranged competition date for the WS Sinclair Cup, postponed earlier in the season due to bad weather, and in truth, the weather wasn’t a lot better than the original date. A strong, blustery southerly swept the length of the loch making it decidedly uncomfortable with the south shore and in the lee of the Muckle Holm the only hope for shelter.
The south end was heavily populated with boats as many of the 21 anglers chose the quietest water, but before long they had spread across the loch, searching for fish which were proving difficult to find. It turned out that the best baskets came from the quietest water in front of the site and the Hatchery corner.
Winner of the WS Sinclair Cup on the night was a delighted John Munson with a very creditable 7 fish for 5lb 12ozs, great angling in challenging conditions. Others who went close included our popular French angling brother Phillipe Avril with 5 fish for 4lb, Mike Frith with 5 for 3lb 14ozs, Jim Adams who continues his good form with 6 for 3lb 13ozs and Stewy Leslie with 5 for 3lb 9 ozs. Heaviest fish by a fair margin on the night was a nice one going 1lb 12ozs to Andrew Morgan.
Top of the water was favoured by the most successful anglers, with John on the Airflo 6 foot Fast Tip line and fishing his Munchkin Hedgehog and Erlend’s Cat to good effect, Phillipe fished a floating line in shallow water with the Norski Lad his top pattern, other flies mentioned in the shakedown include Merkister Maid, Hulk, Orange Hedgehog and Naked Spur, and not once did I hear the Ace of Spades mentioned, unbelievable! Again, the lads in the hut carrying out the weighing etc did a sterling job, thanks again, Alan Craigie, Leslie Miller and Norman Irvine.
It’s back onto the big loch on Saturday, fishing on Harray from 10am until 4pm, she’s very moody at the minute with fish only seeming to come on with calmer conditions and fly life, and with lighter winds forecast at the moment, fingers crossed for a good fishing day, tight lines!
