Stenness produces a winner for the Peter Miller memorial trophy

Top Rod John Munson

A small field of 23 anglers took to the brackish waters of the Loch of Stenness on the evening of Tuesday 4th July to compete for the Peter Miller Memorial Trophy. I think it’s fair to say that most anglers have a love/hate relationship with the salty swamp. They love it when all goes well and the few fish caught stick on and secure a bucketful of points. Conversely, it can be a lonely place when the fish of a lifetime breaks off and the angler comes in with an empty basin.
As far as Stenness competitions go, it was fairly successful one, with just one blank and around 40 fish landed. Weather on the night was conducive, with a light to moderate easterly wind and more that a touch of sunshine. Top rod, and securing the Peter Miller Memorial Trophy went to John Munson with a nice average basket of 3 fish for 3 lb 4 oz taken from “back of the hotel” drifts. In fact I’m sure I heard that John took his 3 fish in a clatter in the first hour and that was it for his evening. In fact, most of the successful anglers caught early and late with a long lean period in the middle. Other noteworthy catches included Norman Irvine with 4 for 2 lb 9 oz and Brian Foreman with 4 for 2 lb 1 oz. Successful fly patterns included almost anything bright and gaudy from the deep recesses of the fly box.
Special mention must go to one of our relatively new competition anglers, Richard Byers, who had never boat fished Stenness before and caught his first Stenness trout  on virtually his first cast on the loch. One experienced angler announced this was his very last ever Stenness competition as his relationship with the loch had completely broken down. His tiny fish and mass hordes of seals were offered in excuse. I’ve heard the fishing is much better in Montana!!
So it’s now over to Harray for the much loved “early morning” on Sunday 9th July. Big catches guaranteed – or will they be?? Harray’s trout and Orkney’s weather might have a say on this matter.
