HARD GOING ON HARRAY FOR THE FERRYLOUPERS TROPHY

Top Bag Norman Irvine

It was the Ferryloupers Trophy last Thursday evening on Harray, and with bright sun and a cold SE breeze, many anglers thought it was going to be a hard night, and how right they were!
Most anglers headed for shelter at the 6.30 start, with Ballarat, Merky Bay and Josey’s seeing most of the action at the start. It wasn't long before there were boats shifting about, a sure sign that sport was slow. Key to success on the night was to keep on the right shallow ground and preferably drifts which had not been fished heavily before, although with the water a bit coloured, the fish were not boat shy with many rising very close to the boat. When the sun went down, so did the wind and there was some late action to be had if you were in the right location, with trout feeding on black midge.
Norman Irvine took the best basket on the night with 7 fish for 5lb 5ozs, which he took in various locations throughout the night with Pontooth and Bankhead being his best areas. Black Snatchers and Hutchs Pennel were his best flies. Other creditable baskets were weighed in by Ken Kennedy with 6 for 5lb 4ozs, Jimmy Grant with 7 for 5lb 1oz and Sandy Mc Connachie with 6 for 4lb 8ozs.
This being the Ferryloupers Trophy there are sums to do and averages to work out and to cut a long story short, Ken wins the Trophy with the average Ferryloupers basket going 2lb 14 5/8ozs to the locals average of 2lb 4 3/4ozs.
With this competition being so close to the Scottish National qualifier, info on successful tactics  was hard to come by but the stand out patterns were Pennels, Snatchers and general midge imitations, mainly in black. Floating line, slow glass and midge tip lines were the order of the day.
By the time 1030 came along and time to head back for the site, it was quite dark and navigation was quite tricky, as one skipper found out on his way home, clattering the skerry at the Peedie Ess Holm at full throttle, clean underwear required on his return to Finstown I would think.
