Kenny Macleod wins final competition in style

Any Loch winner Kenny Macleod

All the lochs had been tried out in the week leading up to the Alan Findlay Cup, but predictably, all but a few of the 33 anglers entered, were at Harray for the 11am kick off. For the first time this season, shirt sleeves were the order of the day, with a warm SE breeze and broken cloud, hopes and expectations were high with a lot to play for in the final competition of the season.
There were a couple of boats which  ventured to the far north and south ends of the loch but for  everybody else it was Bochan, the jungle drums had obviously let most anglers know the hotspot and what had been found in the days previous.
To say Bochan fished well would be an understatement, it fished its head off! From the start to the finish there were rods bent into fish, it was clear it was going to be a cracking  competition, where good angling would win the day.
There were anglers who caught well early on, and others who came good later in the day, but Kenny McLeod picked away all day and deservedly secured the Alan Findlay Cup with 20 fish for 13lb 3ozs. Runner up was James Bews, just back from a tough go on Rutland, and showing he hadn't lost any of his competitive spirit weighing in 19 fish for 12lb 10ozs. Mr Consistent himself, Norman Irvine, who, according to himself was just out for a relaxing days fishing, aye right!, was third with 14 for 11lb,  which also included the heaviest fish at 1lb 9ozs.
It was all sinking lines with the dI7 and 7sweep most quoted, but different retrieves worked better at different times of the day, slow and deeper early and fast pulling later showed the fish came up in the water as the day wore on. Kenny McLeod generously donated his winning cast of flies for the big fly auction, with his Naked Spur variant taking the bulk of his fish, he was also quick to point out that he had benefitted greatly from a trip out during the week with Ian Hutcheon,  whose hints and tips had helped him no end. Other patterns which scored were Merky Hulk, Hulk, Wooderski, Cod N Chips, Erlend's Cat and Dabblers.
As always, the results and final placings were worked out in quick time by Alan Craigie, Norman Irvine and Ian Hutcheon. Norman was officially crowned Fisherman of the Year for the second year in a row, and for the 14th time in an incredible record of success over the years. So the team placings finished as follows, first six are, in order of finish, Norman Irvine, Stewy Leslie, Sandy McConnachie,Jim Bews, Neil Chalmers and Jim Harcus. Second six are, Ken Kennedy, Kevin Muir, Ian Hutcheon, Thorfinn Muir, Stewart Wood and Andrew Morgan, congratulations to all of the above who will represent OTFA in 2017.
A word of thanks to Alan Craigie, Comp. Convenor, Norman Irvine, Official Weigher and Billy Thomson, Scrutineer, for all their work at the weigh- ins this year. Brian Thomas must also be applauded for  providing  the beer for the boys at the last weigh in, much appreciated after a long hot day.
That just leaves the Final Fling next weekend for most of us, with the draw having been made at this week's weigh in. Stenness loch has dropped and the gates at Brodgar are open, so any sea trout waiting to get through will undoubtedly make it now. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few turn up in baskets at next week's weigh in, tight lines and report to follow.
