HARRAY FISHES WELL IN THE EARLY MORNING COMPETITION

Top Rod Billy Thomson

The ever popular early morning session was fished on Harray last Sunday morning, starting at 7am and finishing at 1pm. Most of the 32 anglers found the early start was conducive to some great sport with numerous first class catches weighed in.
Conditions were favourable at the start, with a steady westerly breeze and full cloud cover. Many anglers reported fast and furious sport right from the off, especially those who chose to fish Ballarrat and Bochan. It would appear that it is the middle third of the loch which is holding most fish at the moment, from Ess Holms down to Neds Islands. As the day wore on, boat pressure certainly put fish down and off, but those in the right place at the right time had taken enough fish to put them well ahead of the field.
Best basket of the day, in a very close finish, securing the Tommy Thomson Trophy, came from a delighted Billy Thomson, who put 20 fish for 14lb 2ozs in the boat, fishing a drift out of Bochan for the duration. In second place, was our French cousin Phillipe, who, undeterred by our decision to leave the EU, turned up to give us a good lesson on how it's done with 19 fish for 13lb 6ozs, and third was Kevin Muir with 20 fish for 13lb 4ozs, mostly from Ballarat. Best fish of the day was a belter at 1lb 11ozs weighed in by John Munson.
On the day, there was definitely more than one way to skin a cat as it were, with Billy and Phillipe working with Hedgehogs on an intermediate line and Kevin and other successful anglers sticking with the DI7. Flies of the day were definitely Cod N Chips on the sunk lines and Fiery Claret, Madeira Orange, Burnt Orange, Golden Flame and Big Pinky Hedgehogs.
It's back to evening fishing for the next stint, with Boardhouse the venue a week on Tuesday. Can all anglers please respond positively to Neil Chalmers request for flies for an Orkney Selection box for a good supporter of our club, asap please.
