SCORCHING HOT ON HARRAY FOR THE MERKISTER CUP

Top Rod Norman Irvine

The hope was for an improvement in the weather, but at Sunday was just too hot. Cloudless skies and an easterly wind are probably the least conducive angling conditions you could imagine, but as always, Harray produced a good result, with some very good baskets weighed in.
29 anglers set sail at midday on Sunday, factor 50 applied to all exposed areas, and plenty liquids on board. There was not much conversation to be seen amongst the anglers before the off, a sure sign that some  had found feeding fish on the days before, and were  playing their cards close to their chests. One thing was plain to see from the first drifts set up, and that was that the fish were holding in deeper water, with Ess Holms, Nistaben, Ballarrat and Bankhead all well populated with boats.
There was a lot of motoring about from drift to drift for most of the day, an indication of hard times, but there were anglers finding success in certain areas, as the weigh in would prove. Top rod on the day, and securing the Merkister Cup was Norman Irvine, with a very creditable 12 fish for 8lb 15ozs, a superb effort in the conditions. Runner up was Stewy Leslie with 10 for 7lb 5ozs, with other good  baskets weighed in by Stewart Wood with 7 for 6lb 13ozs, a superb average of nearly a pound a piece, which included the best fish of the day at 1lb 11ozs, Kenny Adam with 7 for 6lb 5ozs and Malcolm Russell with 7 for 6lb 4ozs.
Black lines were the order of the day, from DI5 to DI7, straight or sweep, all were put to good use. Fly patterns were all of the mini lure variety, with Cod and Chips, Merkister Maid, Erlends Cat, Hulk, and Peach Muddler the pick of the bunch. Can I add that it was particularly pleasing to have anglers contacting your correspondent after the event to give successful details, it makes reporting much more enjoyable, more of the same please.
There is a bit of a lull in home competition next week, but with Orkney anglers involved in Anglian Airflo, Inter County in Shetland, and various SANNAC semi finals abroad, there is plenty going on, reports on all of the above to follow, tight lines to all.
