Midnight Cup winner Ian Hutcheon |
Midsummer it may have been, but the weather certainly didn’t reflect the fact, with a blustery southerly breeze, and showers. Still, the Boardhouse trout were on, and there were some excellent baskets of fish brought to the weigh in.
It was quite a bizarre start to the evening when every boat bar one took up station on the south shore, only one boat headed for the Barony end. The Midnight Cup is always a popular event and it was the biggest turn out of the season so far with 37 anglers competing.
Fishing was steady for the first hour for many anglers, but the sun breaking through stopped it stone dead , and it didn’t pick up till it dulled down again. The constant moving around by boats looking for fish continued for most of the night, but, as always is the case, some anglers always crack the case.
Best basket by a country mile was weighed in by Ian Hutcheon, a cracking basket of 15 fish for 13lb 7ozs, which also included the heaviest fish, a peach at 2lb 2ozs. There were numerous other commendable efforts, namely, Jim Bews with 14 for 9lb 9ozs, Malcolm Russells’s 12 for 9lb 8 ½ ozs and Keith Young’s 16 for 9lb 8ozs. Tactics had a common thread to them, Hedgehogs. Some were Ginked up to fish high, wide and handsome, others not. There were Half-Hogs, Emerger Hogs, Full Grown Hogs and somebody even showed me a Booby Hog! Oh come on! Various colours worked but the darker hues were best, with Black, Claret, and Fiery Brown doing the business. Muddlers also accounted for many anglers’ fish, with Viva, Kate McLaren, Clan Chief and Doobry mentioned.
Successful angling is usually about making the right decisions at the right time. What flies to use, what line to put on and where to fish being the most important. You must follow your instincts not the crowd. The proof of this was plain to see on Saturday night, with Ian Hutcheon at the helm of that single boat which fished the Barony end, ultimately winning the competition.
It’s time to look out the old alarm clock, with an early start on Harray next Saturday at 7am for the ever popular Tommy Thomson Trophy. Here’s hoping for a bonny morning, Caenis hatch anyone?
