Norman Irvine brought 6 fish to the scales |
Strong north easterly winds greeted the 34 anglers at the Stenness loch, fishing for the Peter Miller Memorial Trophy. Many anglers headed up to the head of the wind at Voy, with the rest scattered around the other favoured drifts at Deepdale, Onston, and Redland.
Measuring fish, exceeding the 10” limit were very difficult to come by, but there is apparently a large population of small trout, as well as the usual invaders from the sea side of the brig, with some anglers filling the cast with cuithes at times. There are always a few anglers who get it all right on the night, and it really can be anybody, all you need is to be able to hold on to one good fish.
One angler excelled, as he so often does on Stenness, Norman Irvine brought 6 fish to the scales, weighing 3lb 8ozs, securing the Peter Millar Memorial Trophy. To emphasise what an achievement this was, there were 13 anglers who drew the dreaded blank, easily done on this water. The heaviest fish award was keenly contested with 3 anglers weighing fish in over 2lb in weight, and all fine specimens of what Stenness trout can be they were, with Stewart Wood’s fish weighing 2lb 2ozs the best of the bunch, narrowly out weighing Ken Kennedy’s 2lb 1oz and Andrew Morgan’s 2lb 1/2oz. Other baskets of note came from Stewy Leslie with 3 for 2lb 13ozs, and Jimmy Grant’s 4 for 2lb 12ozs.
Most productive areas were Redland, Heathery Point, Voy and Deepdale, nothing new there then. The floating line appeared to out-do the intermediate with the successful flies being Colin’s Killer, which has now become a favourite for many on Stenness, Silver Cardinal, Orange Zulu, Coch Zulu, Stinger and Soldier Palmer.
Next on the competition calendar is the WS Sinclair Cup on Boardhouse, Sunday the 20th June, fishing from 10am to 4pm, I’m sure everyone will need a bit of rod bending therapy following Stenness.
