BRIAN FORMAN TAKES CHARGE ON HUNDLAND

Brian Foreman winner of the Walter Lennie Cup
We anglers are a hard bunch to please as far as weather goes. Up until Wednesday night it had definitely been too cold and at times the blustery wind didn’t help, but on the night, it was flat calm, albeit much warmer, which doesn’t please either. Hundland had lived up to its nickname as “Hedgehog Central” on the previous windier evenings, and had produced some spectacular sport for those trying their hand, but the calm night had a major influence on the result.
36 anglers assembled for the 6.30 pm start and for the first time this year , the thermal underwear, which has been an essential part of the kit from day one, was confined to the  bottom drawer. It was encouraging to see all boats just slowly steaming about the loch all night, as Hundland doesn’t do boat pressure. It was less pleasing to see anglers fishing singly, something the Management Committee have been trying to discourage for obvious safety reasons, but at least it was an improvement on the 7 single anglers fishing at the first Swannay competition. Boats spread out the length and breadth of the loch with the north end most popular.
Brian Forman and Leslie Miller started in this area and got off to a great start with 3 or 4 good fish in the boat in the first half hour. They both kept up the catch rate and it was Brian Forman who weighed in the heaviest basket at the end of the night, to secure the Walter Lennie Cup, bringing an impressive 7 fish for 6lb 7ozs to the scales. It wasn’t all good news for Brian as he took a bit of stick for forgetting the generator to light up proceedings, so it was a weigh in by torchlight. Brian and Leslie fished intermediate lines and dabblers took many of their fish. Other tactics which produced for some were DI3 and mini lures and wets, as did suspender buzzers in the last hour. Other good baskets included 8 fish for 5lb 14ozs for Brian Watt, 8 fish for 5lb 12ozs for Kenny Adam, 6 fish for 4lb 4ozs for Keith Young and 4 fish for 4lb 4ozs to Jim Bews’ rod. Heaviest fish weighed in at 1lb 8ozs, to Keith Young, and in general it was felt that the Hundland trout were above average in size and condition than previous seasons. Many anglers struggled and the impromptu piping recital anglers enjoyed from an adjacent dwelling half way through the evening was definitely the highlight of their evening, with someone suggesting that the last tune was appropriately called “The Hundland Lament 2010”.
Next , it’s back to Swannay for an evening competition on the 31st May, it will be interesting to see how it fishes as there hasn’t been an outing at this time of year for many seasons, due to it being incredibly dour, we shall see.
