Another competiton win for Norman on Boardhouse |
Cold, wet and windy, yes its midsummer and time for the Midnight Cup. The weather gods are never kind for this competition. On a summer evening you should be in your shirt sleeves, fishing on a calm loch, targeting rising fish as the sun goes down, not donning the thermal drawers once again and battling your way through waves that would be more akin to the North Sea, not Boardhouse. For all that, it did fish well for some, and the fish were in very good condition.
In this competition, the first choice to be made is whether to fish the Barony End or the Tufta End. In fact it was those who chose to fish the Narrows, half way between, who fared best early on. After the initial drifts, most boats set off in search of fish, and the anglers who headed up to the head of the wind at the Barony end who definitely scored.
Norman Irvine managed to get it exactly right, to lift the Midnight Cup, catching 3 fish on his first drift down the Road Shore and then spending the rest of the night at the top end, amongst quality, feeding fish. Kevin Muir actually caught 2 more fish but not the quality. Their baskets were 10 for 8lb 4ozs and 12 for 8lb respectively. Other nice baskets were weighed in by Malcolm Russell, Ian Smith and Brian Foreman. Norman also had the best fish of the 31 anglers who fished, at 1lb 4ozs.
The fish were generally high in the water, and it was classic Boardhouse tactics which won the day, a floating line and three Hedgehogs. Anglers caught doing other things but the vast majority of trout succumbed to the lure of the surface disturbing hogs. Orange and claret were the best colours.
The Midnight Cup sees the fly fisherman half way through their competition programme, and this last result propelled both Norman and Kevin right into the all important top 6. Some anglers who started the season well seem to be slowly dropping down the table, while others are hanging on in there, hoping for a good result to put them back in. You better set your alarm clocks for next Saturday morning as its back to Harray for the popular early morning competition, fishing 7am to 1pm. What’s the chance of a Caenis hatch in warm calm conditions? Slim to feck all, I reckon, if this weather keeps up.
