| Midnight Cup win for Malcolm Russell |
This was for many anglers, their first foray on Boardhouse of the season.
The weather had been improving all week, with temperatures ever increasing,
but the fresh to strong south easterly made it feel decidedly chilly, especially
when the sun set. There was a pretty even split of boats who headed either
to the Barony end or Tufta end at the 7pm start, with some starting with
shoreline drifts while others fished the wide blue yonder.
It would appear that there were two successful methods of putting fish in
the bass on the night. Typical of Boardhouse, it was either right on the
top with a floating line and Hedgehogs, or a sinking line of some density
and mini lures.
Malcolm Russell fished the latter method and put a basket of 16 fish for
11lb 5 3/4ozs on the scales, a tremendous effort on what was for some anglers,
a very dour night. This easily secured the Midnight Cup for Malcolm. Those
who came closest were Kenny McLeod with 9 and Sandy McConnachie with 10,
with the rod average being about 4. Graham Adamson took the heaviest fish
of the night, which was also the heaviest of the season so far, a belter
of a trout going 2lb 9 1/2ozs. A very good turnout of 29 anglers fished
on the night.
Fly pattern on Boardhouse was as ever crucial with the Norski Lad and all
its variants definitely needing to be on your cast, with some anglers fishing
them on bob middle and tail! Black Cat, Doobry Muddler, Quasimodo and numerous
colours of Hedgehog were also mentioned in the post mortum. Successful drifts
were basically out in the open water, with the Narrows and the Barony end
fishing well very late on, with one angler reporting that he had 2 fish
at 11 o’clock, motored to the Barony end for the last hour and caught
another 6. This was quite unbelievable to other anglers fishing the Tufta
End who were fishless for the last hour. That’s the enigma that is
Boardhouse, she can be very unforgiving, or throw fish out at you and there
is very little you can do about it.
Orkney Trout Fishing Association have 2 teams down at the Lake of Menteith
this week fishing the prestigious Anglian Water Fulling Mill International
Fly Fishing Championship. The very latest news is brilliant with OTFA B
winning their heat on Monday the 18th, and also picking up the individual
prizes with Kenny McLeod securing the heaviest basket and Graham Adamson
weighing in the heaviest fish of the match, a cracker going 6lb 3ozs. A
tremendous team performance puts them into Thursdays’ Scottish final.
OTFA A fish their heat today, Tuesday the 19th. A full report of both heats
and Final will follow on their return.
