| The smile says it all for John Munson |
Last Tuesday, the evening of the 5th, saw the OTFA fly fishermen on Hundland,
competing for the Walter Lennie Cup. Weatherwise, it wasn’t to bad,
cloud, good breeze but still an edge to the Easterly. Water quality left
a lot to be desired, with the loch still very coloured following the high
winds and torrential rain of the previous week. It felt weird with the water
level right up in the buttercups, it was like fishing in the sea with a
high tide. The fish were there to be caught, but not many anglers cracked
the case, as is the way on this enigmatic loch at times. It took a good
basket of trout to take the Walter Lennie Cup and John Munson’s 12
for 6lb 13ozs was certainly that, on a night where most anglers could only
manage 2 or 3. This was John’s first OTFA competition win and his
delight was only surpassed by the hearty cheer from his fellow anglers,
a very popular result. Others who had success on the night were, Andrew
Morgan with 7, including the heaviest fish of the evening, a cracking specimen
going 1lb 13ozs, Ian Hutcheon with 7, Ken Kennedy with 7 and Malcolm Russell
with 6.
Most productive drifts were into the SE and SW corners of the loch, with
most fish taken from the skerries, whose position for most was an educated
guess as the combination of dark water and high levels made it very difficult
to find them. On the night, it was those who fished an intermediate or sinking
line who seemed to do the business with the Camo, Ghost tip and DI3 all
used by the top rods. Swooping the flies up to the hang and holding them
their for as long as possible certainly seemed to attract the odd enquiry
from the Hundland trout. Flies that were mentioned in the post mortem were
just what you would expect with Olive Hedgehog accounting for many fish,
Orange was also good for some, Foreman’s Favourite, Loch Ordie, Dabblers
and Muddlers.
It’s the Inter County weekend coming up so best of luck to Ian Hutcheon,
Stewy Leslie, Sandy Mcconnachie, Malcolm Russell, Kevin Muir and Ken Kennedy
who represent Orkney on Harray this year.
It was a full house for Orkney anglers who fished the Scottish National
qualifier at the Lake of Menteith on the 22nd of May. The quartet of Sandy
Mcconnachie, Malcolm Russell, Erlend Hutchison and Ken Kennedy all made
it through to their chosen semi finals. All the best to Sandy and Malcolm
who are at Venechar and Erlend and Ken who chose to go to Lintrathen.
