| 6 fish for Stewy secures trophy |
The NE wind meant there were a few options as to where to start, with most
boats heading for Voy, the Dogger, Deepdale and the Hotel Shore. As it turned
out, with the exception of Voy, a surprising amount of fish were boated
on all the other drifts.
Over the past number of years, it has only taken a couple of fish for a
couple of pound to win on Stenness, in fact some nights there were not enough
fish caught to distribute all the points! Stewart Leslie’s basket
of 6 fish for 5lb 3 1/2ozs taken at Redland was exceptional baring that
in mind. This secured him the Trophy, with Sandy McConnachie’s 4 for
4lb 4ozs, Willie Smith’s 3 for 2lb 11ozs and Colin Sutherland’s
5 for 2lb 6 ozs proving that it was a good night on Stenness indeed. Sandy
also had the heaviest fish weighing in at 1lb 14 1/4ozs. In total, there
were 53 fish weighed in, almost a rod average of 1 fish, it doesn’t
sound much but it is a huge improvement from whats’ been. Feeling
in the discussions held following the weigh in at the Stenness Hotel was
that the stocking of fry into the burns throughout Stenness over the last
number of years and the continuing improvement to habitat, monitoring stock
through electro fishing was bearing fruit. Many thanks to Joe and Karen
at the Stenness Hotel for the much appreciated soup, sandwiches and refreshment.
Tactics which brought success on the night were definitely an intermediate
line of some sort as opposed to the usual floater. The flies were pretty
much the usual suspects, Soldier Palmer, Coch Zulu, Orange Zulu, Dame Edna,
Pinkie, (the new name for Colin’s Killer) and a plethora of other
gaudy, bright concoctions. All in all, a very encouraging night for angling
on Stenness. The show moves on to Hundland next week, get your Hedgehogs
out
