BRIAN FOREMAN WINS HIGHLAND PARK TROPHY

This was a re-scheduled match that was cancelled due to high winds. Although the wind strength was less, it was decidedly Baltic from the north, and this, coupled with brilliant sunshine made it one of the toughest competitions for some time.

A superb performance by Brian Foreman on a very difficult  Swannay

36 anglers spread all over the loch at the start, with most choosing to drift the shorelines. This was by all accounts unproductive for most and it was the anglers who searched the deeper water who found success.
Three anglers excelled in these hard, and for some, impossible conditions. Each managed 5 fish with Erlend Hutchisons’basket going 3lb 15 1/4ozs, Kenny Adams’basket realising 4lb 14 1/4ozs and top rod, Brian Foremans’ catch weighing in at 5lb 6 1/4ozs, securing the Highland Park Trophy. The Gordon Grant Memorial Trophy was won with a trout of 1lb 10 3/4ozs weighed in by Alan Shearer.
Most of the successful boats found fish way out of the Red Roofed Hoose and the Reaper. The Long Points also gave up a few fish.
It was one of those days for most other anglers where you were just casting and hoping something would latch on, for many anglers, the first fish they saw on the day was at the weigh in, the Blankety Blank cheque book and pen very much in evidence.
Successful tactics on the day, just to scunner anglers who didn’t score even more, were just what you would expect in the conditions, DI7 and anything black and silver. Brian Foreman caught all 5 of his fish on a Montana nymph variant, the very fly he gave me one of to try in the car park before we set of, had I tried it before I spoke to him with an hour to go? Of course I hadn’t. I immediately tied it on the bob and caught 2 fish before the finish, cheers Brian! Ace of Spades and the like also caught.
Highlight of the weekend on Swannay was on the Saturday afternoon, when the boys up for a practise were witness to a unique event, when a seaplane circled the loch a couple of times and landed on the loch below Chrismo. After a short time it took off and was last seen heading for Stromness.
The bush telegraph tells me that Harray is fishing very well with large hatches of Olives bringing the fish on, and where is the next competition, Stenness! Definitely no Olives there, and probably not many fish either, why do we put ourselves through it .
