BOARDHOUSE VERY TESTING IN PENULTIMATE COMPETITION

It was the Eunson Cup last Sunday afternoon on Boardhouse, and it proved
to be a stern test of angling for all 31 competitors. With it being the
second last round in the league programme, and still many questions to be
answered, there was a large presence on the loch the day before, and it
actually fished quite well and hopes were high for match day, but the brilliant
sunshine and clear blue skies put paid to that!
There was great wonder and amazement at the start as Kevin Muir’s
boat partner, and league leader, Erlend Hutchison, was nowhere to be seen
as Kevin fished on his own for the first half hour. Erlend eventually turned
up, a tad red faced as he thought it was a 2 oclock start, not midday. He
was sitting at home tying up a few flies when Kevin phoned and enquired
politely as to his whereabouts. Angling at the start was confined to the
margins where fish had been feeding heavily the day before, with the bulk
of angling pressure at the Barony end. It soon became obvious that the blazing
sun, combined with very coloured water from days of wind and rain were going
to have an extremely detrimental effect on the outcome.
It took an exceptional effort to take a basket of 6 fish and it was Leslie
Miller, winning his first competition, who was awarded the Eunson Cup, a
very popular result with his fellow anglers. His basket weighed in at 5lb
4ozs, other tremendous baskets were brought to the scales by Colin Sutherland
with 4 for 4lb 8ozs, Stewy Leslie with 5 for 4lb 3ozs and Ian Hutcheon with
5 for 3lb 5ozs. Heaviest fish was weighed in by Jim Harcus, a whanger, according
to himself at 2lb 2ozs. Testament as to how difficult it was on the day
was the fact that 11 anglers received the Blankety Blank cheque book and
pen, nil points.
Most fish were taken on floating or intermediate lines although there was
a late flurry of fish taken on sunk lines in the last half hour as the cloud
cover returned. Hedgehogs, Peach Muddler, Hoppers, Green tailed Wickhams,
Olive Dabbler, Merkister Maid, Black Cat and Black and Silver were all mentioned
in the post mortem.
When the points were tallied and the league placings reviewed, it showed
that the positions had shuffled about a bit and that it was even closer
for positions in the top 12. Colin Sutherland, Brian Foreman and James Bews
have fished their way in to contention for a top 12 placing, and you can
still perm any 6 from 9 for the top 6 team. The Fisherman of the Year is
not a done deal with Erlend Hutch not on the score sheet this week, giving
a couple of anglers a glimmer of hope for the top slot. The fact that it
is the Any Loch Competition that concludes the season usually adds a bit
of spice and intrigue as to where everybody is fishing on the day. Somehow
I think it will all be played out on Harray next Saturday, it will be a
brave man or a gambler who goes anywhere else, but I hear Swannay is fishing
its socks off, LOL. All the best to every angler out there, enjoy it for

The OTFA Competitions and Entertainments Sub Committee ran a very successful
fund raiser over the Show season where they raffled a boat for club funds.
It was a top of the range, Scapa Drifter, from Orkney Fibre Glass at Hatston,
widely regarded as the ultimate in angling craft. The lucky winner was a
delighted Ian Tulloch from Kirkwall, a keen angler who can now fish in comfort
and style.
