| Superb fishing performance from Ken Kennedy |
This was the last scheduled competition of the season on Harray, the Ferryloupers
Trophy, and the”big loch” continued to fish exceptionally well.
The weather also took a turn for the better, and this, coupled with a hatch
of Caenis of biblical proportions, had the trout on the fin and most anglers
had a memorable afternoons sport.
There were two methods which were proving successful prior to Sunday, either
right up on the top with a floating or intermediate line, or fishing at
depth with a DI7 or 8 line. Anglers seemed to be split 50-50 as to which
would work best, but on the whole, the sinkers proved to be the answer.
Location was critical, with Nistaben, Josey’s, Merkister, Ess Holms/Tenston
, and Clay Face proving to be the hotspots. It seemed quite interesting
in the fact that most anglers who fished south of the Ess Holms favoured
floating and intermediate lines, while north of the dividing line, the DI7
was the answer.
Of the 30 anglers participating, Ken Kennedy weighed in the heaviest basket
of the day, closely followed by Ian Robertson, Erlend Hutchison and Andrew
Morgan. Heaviest fish of the day was taken by John Munson, a nice specimen
weighing 1lb 7ozs. John has become a bit of a specimen hunter of late with
a cracking sea trout of 5lb 3zs coming to his rod in Merkister Bay earlier
in the week. Numerous anglers have reported sightings of other good seatrout
so it would appear that there has been a small early run into the loch from
Stenness.
Successful tactics on the day were as indicated, divided, but sinking lines
were most popular amongst the top anglers. Fly pattern was pretty much what
its been, Black Cat, White Cat, Norski Lad, Merkister Maid, Orange hedgehog
etc. As this was the Ferryloupers trophy, there was the usual sums
to do for the average basket per angler fishing for either the Locals or
the Ferryloupers. This did not change the outcome and Ken Kennedy took the
trophy on behalf of the Ferryloupers.
The result did not really change the leader board drastically, only in the
fact that one or two anglers may have seen their hopes of a top 6 six finish
dashed, but you could easily still perm any 6 from 9 for the top team. A
break from competition now for a fortnight, then its back to the enigmatic
Boardhouse for the penultimate date.
This week sees the Association Competition Sub Committee
raising much needed funds with a Boat to be raffled at the County Show.
The boat is a Scapa Drifter from Orkney Fibreglass, widely regarded as the
very best available in its class and a very prestigious and valuable prize,
don’t forget to visit the OTFA stand at either the Dounby or County
Show to buy your tickets.
