TOUGH NIGHT ON BOARDHOUSE FOR WILLIE WINDWICK CUP

A delighted Jim Adams after his Boardhouse win

Boardhouse Loch proved a hard nut to crack last Tuesday night, and many anglers left the weigh in frustrated at just how difficult it was to put fish in the boat, especially when there was a fair movement of fish feeding on Caenis in parts of the loch.
Those anglers who had managed to fish Boardhouse prior to Tuesday had an inkling that fish could be hard to come by, but it was probably worse than expected on the night.
The persistent, cool, NE breeze eased somewhat as anglers spread all over the loch at the 6.30 start, with the Barony end proving most popular. It was a bizarre evening in the fact that there were no boats in the deep water, with all anglers either fishing along, onto, or off the shores, and, that in the car park prior to the start, there was an abundance of orange, yellow, and white lines on rods, floating lines no less! I was beginning to think that we might go a whole season without seeing them.
As the evening progressed, it soon became obvious that it was going to take a tremendous effort to take more than a few fish. One angler cracked the case, Jim Adams had nine fish for 6lb 2ozs, winner, by a country mile, of the Willie Windwick Cup, and a very popular winner with his fellow anglers. Other commendable baskets were, 6 for 5lb2ozs for Neil Chalmers, 6 for 4lb 2ozs for Norman Irvine and 6 for 3lb 120zs for Billy Thomson. Heaviest trout weighed in by the 29 anglers was a fine specimen at 1 1/2lb from Stewy Leslie.
As indicated earlier, floating lines were the order of the day, with a wide selection of fly pattern proving successful. Hedgehogs, Dabblers, Snatchers, Ace of Spades, Hutch’s Pennel, Shippo’s and Coch Zulu proving worthy of mention. With the majority of anglers catching 3 or 4 fish, the points distribution on the night was very close, and with only 3 competitions left, crucial to many anglers. Erlend Hutchison is top of the pile at the moment, but with 6th place only 20 points away, there are some exciting times ahead for some and disappointment for others.
Next weekend sees the social highlight of the angling calendar on Orkney, the Mixed Pairs on Harray, followed by supper at the Merkister Hotel. A chance for anglers to treat their long suffering wives and partners to an enjoyable summers evening afloat, with a box of Maltesers and a bottle of juice to keep them amused while the boys launch their DI7’s into the distance, keep your heads down and your sun glasses on ladies.
