GOOD WEATHER AND GOOD SPORT FOR WS SINCLAIR CUP

Stewy Leslie enjoyed some great sport to win WS Sinclair Cup

At last, a reasonable day on the weather front and some top of the water sport. Boardhouse Loch provided both of these last Sunday 15th when 30 anglers fished the WS Sinclair Cup. This competition was also unusual on two other counts, the Barony End was the hot area and anglers fishing floating lines, were, on the whole, most successful.
Stewy Leslie took the spoils with an outstanding basket of 16 fish for 12lb 3 1/2ozs, taken exclusively in the Barony End. Others who put good baskets together were the in form Keith Young with 11 for 9lb 2 1/2ozs, Alan Shearer with 12 for 7lb 15 1/4ozs, and Kevin Muir weighed in 8 for 6lb 6 3/4ozs. Best fish of the day was taken by Malcolm Russell, a bonny trout weighing 1lb 10 3/4ozs.
It gives me great pleasure in reporting that top fly patterns on the day did not include the Norski Lad, as lately there was no other fly worth a mention. Hedgehogs were the order of the day, with the Boardhouse fish feeding right up in the surface layers. There was a smattering of Olives and Cow Dungs on the water which probably had the fish looking up. Many anglers reported different colours of Hog working, but Claret, Orange, Olive and Green seemed most popular. Other flies which took a few fish included Dabblers, Cormorants and Bumbles.
Boardhouse can be the most enigmatic and infuriating of lochs at times, two anglers can be fishing identical flies, lines, retrieves etc. While the angler at one end of the boat can wheen them out, the bemused angler at the other end, aye, six feet away, can only watch and wonder why he can get little or no response no matter what he does. Examples from last Sunday included Keith Young with 11 and Alan Craigie with 4, and even worse was Stewy Leslie’s 16 and Ken Kennedy’s 5, mind boggling if you are on the receiving end.
Next Sunday 22nd will see the rescheduled competition, a casualty of the weather earlier on, fished on Harray from 6pm to 10pm. This will be followed closely by the next scheduled competition on Boardhouse on Tuesday evening. The league positions are closer than they have been for years with over a dozen anglers right in the frame for the coveted top 6 position, these two in quick succession could see some major changes, just hope you are in the right end of the boat!
