Last Sunday saw the opening of the OTFA fly fishing programme, with Swannay the venue. 35 anglers had pretty poor conditions to contend with, bright sunlight throughout and a strong, raw, southeasterly which never eased for the duration.

| Ian Hutcheon wins first event of 2007 |
Spirits were high at the off with everybody just delighted to see the start
of another competitive season, the strong winds and low temperatures had
kept anglers at home in the early weeks of the season. The bulk of the boats
headed to fish the weather shore, Loudenhill, Long Points and about the
island seeing most pressure. Dale etc was lightly fished, due mainly to
the fact that the wind was blowing off, making it difficult to fish the
shoreline for any length of time
As always, location is everything, with Loudenhill, and further up towards
the Red Roofed Hoose being the hotspots.
Top angler on the day with 7 fish for 6lb 10 1/2ozs was Ian Hutcheon, securing
the Walter Leask Cup. Ian was last years Fisherman of the Year and is obviously
still on top form. Ken Kennedy took the runner up slot with 4 fish for 5lb
15 1/4ozs with the next best coming from Mo Rendall and Graham Adamson.
Tactics were now, what seems to be the norm on Swannay, sinking lines of
varying densities. It didn’t appear that one line out fished another
as long as you got down a couple of feet but for the pernickety amongst
you, DI6 and HI D 6 seemed to be the most successful. As for flies, not
one of you will be surprised to know that Ace
of Spades, Christmas
Tree, Clan
Chief, Bibio
in particular and anything else as long as it was black in general were
best. It was good to see Stormin Norman back as Official weigher and administrator
of good banter and cheek at the weigh in, it was a miss last season.
Next up is the Highland Park Trophy, again on Swannay next Sunday, a bit
of cloud cover and some warmth would be nice. And just a small note for
those who caught nothing this week, you have twice as long to catch something
next week, tight lines.
